Rose-Ellen Fairgrieve

Rose-Ellen Heinz Fairgrieve is an experienced employment attorney who works closely with business owners to manage risk, resolve disputes, and keep their companies protected. With nearly 30 years of legal experience across both public and private sectors, she brings a practical, business-minded approach to employment law. Having led more than 25 jury trials and administrative hearings, she understands how workplace issues unfold and how to address them before they escalate.

Since founding Fairgrieve Law Office in 2013, Rose-Ellen has helped California employers of all sizes prevent claims, navigate complex regulations, and defend against litigation when necessary. As a business owner herself, she approaches every matter with an understanding of the operational and financial realities her clients face.

In 2023, she was recognized as Labor & Employment Lawyer of the Year by Lawyer Monthly. Her work focuses on guiding employers through high-stakes decisions, from employee leaves and internal investigations to litigation strategy. She is known for stepping in during challenging situations and delivering clear, effective solutions that protect her clients’ businesses.

While she is a strong advocate in negotiations and in the courtroom, Rose-Ellen places equal emphasis on prevention. She works with employers to strengthen policies, implement compliant employee handbooks, and provide training that reduces exposure to claims. This proactive approach often saves clients significant time and cost by avoiding disputes altogether.

Prior to opening her own firm, Rose-Ellen had a long, distinguished career in both public and private sectors. A native San Franciscan, Rose-Ellen is proud to have represented the City and County of San Francisco for 15 years as a Deputy City Attorney. As a member of the Labor and Employment team, she defended the city in employment-related claims and lawsuits. She later served as a Supervising Attorney on the Code Enforcement team, leading a group of litigators and overseeing civil actions involving health, safety, and unfair business practices.

She then moved into private practice with Gordon & Rees in San Francisco, representing employers in a wide range of employment matters in both state and federal court. This combination of public sector leadership and private sector advocacy continues to shape her approach today.

Rose-Ellen received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Sociology from the University of California, Davis with honors. Shortly thereafter she attended the University of Southern California for her juris doctorate, where she also graduated with honors.
Rose-Ellen began her legal career as a judicial clerk for a federal judge in U.S. District Court in Michigan. Prior, she served the Legal Aid Foundation of Los Angeles, providing legal services to poor and low-income citizens, while studying for her law degree at the University of Southern California Law Center.
When not working in law, Rose-Ellen treasures spending time with her three children. As a resident and native San Franciscan, she is an enthusiastic supporter of local sports teams, including the Warriors, Giants, 49ers and is eager to cheer the WNBA’s Golden State Valkyries. She enjoys watching her kids participate in sports and occasionally you will find her coaching a basketball team or two. Rose-Ellen is also an active and proud member of the West Portal small business community.
